"Computers are not just the way of the future, but they are happening now and knowing computers well is a prerequisite for most jobs. Even traditional jobs such as carpentry or welding rely on computers and while you may not have to become a coding whiz to send out your bills and do your taxes, it does not hurt to know more about computer than point and drag.
So I am all for computers being part of education and getting kids exposed early to computers. This book tackles coding using python in a manner that is appropriate for kids and makes learning about computers fun because it seen and presented as a game.
I found this book and its approach to teaching kids about computers and coding appropriate for the age group and also entertaining. But maybe most importantly it was also written in a way that parents could follow and work with their kids on these activities.

I received a free copy of the book from the publisher."

  • I am going to be teaching a coding camp this summer at the school I work at, and am excited to use this to introduce programming to younger kids here. The instructions are very easy for younger students to follow along with and the illustrations make it seem not as daunting as it can be.
I will update after our camp to let you all know how it went with a bunch of 10-13 year-olds!
  • A great resource for entry level learning to code with the Python language. Themed toward a younger audience with an emphasis on hand-on exercises.
  • Great learning for kids 12-15
  • Coding for Kids is a good introductory book but PLEASE NOTE that your child will need a good reading comprehension. Recommended for ages 10 -18, our opinion is that this may be way too much for some 10 year olds. Richard has started our 9 1/2 year old coding on the computer and whilst he is doing well there is not so much reading as in this book. I'm sure by the time he is 12, he will be able to tackle this book.

Everything is laid out well with clear instructions on how to get what you need. It gets you started quickly. There are seven chapters
Welcome to Python! * print {"Hello!"} * Fun with Numbers * Strings and Other Things * Looking at Loops * May the Turtle Be with You * Reusable Code

At the end you will find
Final Bits and Bytes * An extensive Answer Key * Glossary * Resources * Index

As Richard checked through this he noticed that the instructions on Page 14 tell the reader to check their work against the graphic but the graphic is wrong and should look more like the one at the bottom of Page 21.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. That has not influenced my review. Thanks, Liz
  • I teach Python to kids and grownups so I value an introduction to coding that’s clear and easy to follow. Also, I’ve written a book or two on Python so I’m qualified to nitpick about well-formed projects and overall presentation.

Coding for Kids Python succeeds on all counts. It’s informative, engaging and well-organized. From the first chapter on installing Python on your computer the author includes so many detailed screenshots, there's no longer any excuse for you not to succeed at installing Python.

The next chapters focus on printing, variables, operators, strings, lists and the book even answers the question, “When should I use a tuple and when should I use a list?” The author introduces the topics with engaging projects designed to print things kids will find fun, and challenges to test their skills. The text is peppered with cute illustrations, so you’ll easily find the section on escape characters if you’re looking for it.

There’s a long section introducing Python’s turtle module for making virtual turtles walk around the screen leaving paths. As with so many topics in the book, the author goes a little deeper than I’d expect for a kids book, meaning it could also be a good introduction to programming for grown-up kids, too. For anybody put off by text-heavy programming books, Chapter 6 shows how to use the turtle module to create beautiful graphics while learning the basics.

The answers (“possible solutions”) to the challenges are provided, with a glossary, index and helpful list of resources for more programming help.

Coding for Kids Python is a very visual, well-presented introduction to programming that I suspect would not only please young learners but older learners who might be turned off by the less-friendly-looking offerings next to it on the bookstore shelf. I like how the text emphasizes the important bits with headings, bold text and code snippets.

If I had to come up with a negative, it would only be that some of the variable names are really long, and the target audience might not have great typing skills yet. I agree descriptive variable and function names are good practice, but graham_cracker_crust_lovers is even beyond my character limit. However, there’s no problem with the user adapting and shortening the variable names and if you’re using an editor with auto-complete it won’t be that big a deal.
