PDF The Verbal Behavior Approach How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders Audible Audio Edition Mary Lynch Barbera Tracy Rasmussen Jen Gosnell John Murray Books
A step-by-step guide on how to help children develop language and speaking skills.
The verbal behaviour (VB) approach is a form of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) that is based on B. F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behaviour and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a board-certified Behaviour Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.
This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills and also explains how to teach nonvocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behaviour, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills that would benefit any child.
This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the verbal behaviour approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

"It is a fantastic book and we are using it to introduce our new behavioral technicians and registered behavior technicians to the way we do therapy at our center.
We are giving a copy to the parents of our little clients because it is written in such a way that a parent can understand how to use these techniques at home."

- This is a wonderful, detailed, and easy to navigate and implement overview of verbal behavior for parents, caregivers, teachers, SLPs, and new ABA practitioners seeking an introduction to ABA VB. I am a parent of a child with autism and a BCBA and appreciated the synthesis of behavioral science with practical application and every day terminology and concepts that would empower and appeal to someone not well versed in ABA, but seeking an evidence based approach to help their child. It is also compelling as the author shares personal anecdotes of her own journey using ABA VB with her son. I recommend this book highly.
- Thank you for this book. In this new world of autism my family has entered, with so many unfamiliar terms and suggestions, this book has really helped me to make some sense of what our son needs and the therapy he is receiving. Im better able now to make relevant steps in administering his home therapy and helping him throughout the day.
- I am a BCBA who works in schools. I read this book for the first time this past spring and was so thrilled with the high-quality information presented in such an accessible way that I had my school district purchase a copy for all of our special education staff (teachers, paras, SLPs, and even some parents) so that we may all read it and collaborate about implementation together. It's such an empowering book because it is real, relatable, and gives people (even those with little to no background knowledge of ABA) some solid steps to take in working with children with autism.
Thank you for this book and for your work, Mary Barbera! FIVE STARS! - I practice ABA but found it very helpful with encouraging communication such as manding and tacting as well as more naturalistic ways of teaching! Also helpful for parents to read as well!
- It is a fantastic book and we are using it to introduce our new behavioral technicians and registered behavior technicians to the way we do therapy at our center.
We are giving a copy to the parents of our little clients because it is written in such a way that a parent can understand how to use these techniques at home. - This book is amazing! I'm a special education teacher and the explanations, examples, and strategies described in this book are easy to follow if you're a beginning special ed teacher, support service or parent with a child with disabilities. This book does focus on Autism, based on my experience and according to the author, can be applied to other developmental delays and intellectual disabilities.
- Excellent book. It's very easy to read, the author uses terminology, but explains and breaks it down very well. I have read a lot of books regarding this topic and felt like this book is one I will refer to if needed. Other books, I have had a hard time understanding terminology I am unfamiliar with. This book is great for using terminology and being able to apply the knowledge. I would highly recommend this book to those looking for a way to apply ABA.
- When my son was diagnosed with autism, it became clear that ABA was the best type of therapy available to treat autism. We quickly enrolled him in a GREAT ABA program, and he was quickly making progress. He was seeing a speech therapist at this time through our state early intervention program.
However, using appropriate language in a functional manner was VERY difficult for him. This book comes highly recommended from professionals in the autism field, and the verbal behavior approach is one approach to ABA, which is considered Best Practice for autism therapy.
I was reading through the book rather casually, when a common speech therapy approach was basically denounced by the authors. This common ST approach was being used on my son at the time, with a pretty visible negative impact on his ability to use speech appropriately. It was so bad and so obvious that I immediately dismissed his speech therapist. I began using other ideas suggested in the book, and immediately started noticing a difference in his language. He went through professional ABA therapy for two years- a service I was VERY happy with- and I still prefer a VB approach when it comes to teaching language. In his professional ABA programs, he was taught to label objects before learning how to request objects. Everything his therapists attempted to teach him, he learned with ease, but it wasn't until we introduced a VB approach that he learned to use language SPONTANEOUSLY! This book helps you tap into your child's motivation in order to make language important to your child.
His language and speech is at age level now, and I don't worry about him at school, because I know if he needs something or has a problem, he knows how to ask for help. While individual progress in autistic children will vary, depending on many different factors, this book made language acquisition SO much easier for my son, and without it, I believe we would still be using professional services and fighting to catch up to his peers. By the way, I've been to several support groups over the years, and these god-awful ST approaches the authors of this book condemn are ruining children's lives. For example, if your speech therapist teaches your child the word "more" before teaching your child the words for ANY commonly desired object of theirs, they have already set your child's speech back quite a bit. They've already done more damage than good. If I could do ANYTHING over again regarding my son's diagnosis and subsequent treatment, I would have read this book WAY before getting involved with Speech Therapy.
